Burglar Alarm Servicing Wetherby – Whether for home or business a security system should be serviced regularly to ensure that should it ever be needed in a burglary situation that it works. Many of the top insurers offer a discount for a maintained system and, depending upon the risk insured, they can even insist on annual servicing.
However not just any system would be acceptable to an insurer, it would need to be approved. To achieve approval a company must be third-party approved e.g. ‘NSI Gold Standard.’ So a DIY or non-certified installer would struggle to achieve approval.
Be aware that if you accept a discount on premiums or it is a requirement of your insurance to have your alarm serviced then failing to do so could invalidate any claim you may have. If you have said your alarm is maintained and isn’t or you don’t set the system when you leave you could find your claim for burglary rejected. So, always set your alarm and make sure it is regularly serviced. Alarm systems have a memory of thousands of events, all date and time stamped so you can’t pull the wool over a loss adjuster’s eyes. They can read the logs and see if the system was set and when it was last serviced.
Having said all that it just makes sense to have your intruder system maintained, surely should you have a break-in you would want the alarm to do its job? It doesn’t have to cost the earth either, just a low monthly fee will provide an annual service visit, 24 hour call out cover and technical support and cover any call out and labour charges to system related faults for a whole year. So what’s involved in a service? Here’s the steps an engineer carries out:
- Place the control panel in programming mode
- If the system is monitored ring the alarm receiving centre and put on test
- Using a voltmeter check the low voltage supply level (around 12 to 14v) and note it.
- Remove the mains fuse (System now runs on battery only for the rest of the service to ensure the battery holds up)
- Read the historical log checking for any recent activations / faults
- Place the panel in ‘Walk-Test’ mode
- Test every sensor, ensuring movement sensors are giving full coverage and have not been masked (e.g. by new building works or furniture).
- Return to panel and read ‘Walk Test’ results ensuring every detector has registered an activation.
- Activate all sounders (check both internal and external sounders operate correctly)
- If system is wireless ensure all strength signals to every device are within the acceptable band.
- Place ladders adjacent external sounder, remove lid and check tamper alarm activates, then check for any signs of corrosion then reassemble sounder.
- If system is monitored send test signals and check they were received
- IF system has dual-path monitoring (Redcare / CSL Gradeshift) remove each path to ensure path failure signals are received.
- Remove system from programming set system, open entry door then unset system.
- Set system activate system, turn system off and reset system.
- Check activations were received on the app. (and at alarm receiving centre)
- Set system with app, unset system with app.
- Return panel to programming mode.
- Check battery voltage again, ensuring there has bee no significant drop. (if there is replace battery. Note – Standby batteries are relaced every fifth year)
- Replace mains fuse.
So an alarm service is not just pressing a few buttons and gives you the peace-of-mind of knowing your alarm is tip top and fully functioning. Consider that you get all this, app services, 24 hour call out and support all year around for just a small monthly fee and it seems crazy not to have your alarm serviced.
